After visiting 25 US national parks, I've fallen in love with some lesser-known locations. I love visiting Colorado's Mesa Verde National Park, which is home to 800-year-old cliff dwellings. I've also enjoyed my time in Alaska's Denali National Park and Florida's Everglades National Park. The good news is many of these lesser-known national parks are just as spectacular as the big names. I worked in public schools for over two decades and loved that my kids were in school. Not only did homeschooling seem difficult and intimidating, but as a former teacher, I loved that my kids were in school. For more than two decades, I worked in schools — as a classroom teacher, after-school program teacher, volunteer, tutor, and substitute. There were growing pains, but this new version of school worked for us. During remote learning, for the first time, they had the freedom to focus on learning without the social exhaustion of a seven-hour school day.

After traveling to 59 US national parks, a few stand out more than others. Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming tops my list of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. After visiting 39 US national parks, one stands out as the most unique I've been to. Unlike many national parks, Hot Springs National Park is set in the middle of an Arkansas city. This park features a row of historic bathhouses and the only brewery located in a US national park. AdvertisementWhen thinking of national parks, many people imagine vast tracts of land and scenic drives through awe-inspiring mountain, forest, or desert scenery. Hot Springs National Park, on the other hand, is the country's second smallest national park and is set right in the middle of a small Midwest city.

Some US national parks require tourists to make a reservation before visiting. Popular destinations like Yosemite National Park and Zion National Park are on the list. The scenic sights and outdoorsy activities attract millions to US national parks, typically open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Although there are 428 national park sites, there are only 63 that exclusively have "national park" in their name. The reservations typically cost $2, excluding Shenandoah National Park, Haleakalā National Park, Zion National Park, and Acadia National Park.
